Advice to Municipal Bond Investors: Grab Long-Term Yields -- Market Talk

Dow Jones
Jan 15

1155 ET - Municipal bond investors should take advantage of yields offered by longer-term bonds, Income Research + Management's Wesly Pate says. "As you extend a little bit of duration, you tend to pick up more yield within the muni market than what you do other asset classes," he says. Tax exemptions increase the potential return. A AAA 20-year bond can achieve a 4% yield after tax, which Pate describes as an "untouchable level of yield." Specific sectors offering value include high-quality housing securities and gas prepaid munis. Pate says long-duration supply tends to be steady, while retail buyers have a bias toward shorter-term bonds, supporting higher yields in the back of the curve.
