意大利官员抗议华盛顿在今年冬季奥运会期间部署美国移民与海关执法局（ICE）工作人员，这凸显出该机构在本土打击移民行动中发挥的作用正在海外引发反对。
米兰市长Giuseppe Sala在当地电台表示，他的城市“不欢迎”ICE执法人员。意大利前总理孔特等反对派领导人也表达了类似的观点。他们要求意大利禁止ICE执法人员入境。
短短几小时内，网上一份要求意大利阻止他们入境的请愿书就获得了超过3万个签名。
一名美国特勤局官员表示，ICE特工此行前往意大利，是作为副总统万斯和国务卿鲁比奥安保团队的一部分。
该官员称，这些特工将沿两位官员的车队行驶路线执行警戒任务，不会从事调查工作。来自该机构国土安全调查部门的人员将协助国务院的外交安全局，而将于2月6日开幕的冬奥会整体安保行动仍由意大利当局负责。
在以往，ICE特工现身此类活动通常被视为例行安排。但鉴于该机构在特朗普打击移民行动中扮演的角色及联邦执法人员在明尼阿波利斯枪杀两名美国人引发的批评，其出现已成为高度敏感的话题。
