Regions Bank settles USAA lawsuit over mobile-banking patents

By Blake Brittain

Feb 3 (Reuters) - Regions Bank RF.N has settled a lawsuit from financial-services company United Services Automobile Association that accused it of infringing USAA patents related to mobile-banking technology, according to a Tuesday filing in Texas federal court.

The filing said that the companies agreed to the settlement following mediation in January. Spokespeople for USAA did not immediately respond to a request for comment and more information, and a Regions spokesperson declined to comment.

The lawsuit was one of several patent cases brought by USAA against other financial services providers over mobile-banking technology. San Antonio-based USAA has previously won more than $500 million in related cases against Wells Fargo and PNC Bank, although its $218 million jury win against PNC was overturned by a federal appeals court last year, and settled similar disputes with banks including Truist.

USAA, which caters to military service members and their families, said it created its technology in the mid-2000s to allow its members to deposit checks from abroad. It sued Birmingham, Alabama-based Regions last year, arguing the mobile-deposit function of Regions' smartphone application infringes USAA's patents.

Regions denied the allegations and argued that USAA's patents were invalid. It also countersued USAA for allegedly infringing its own mobile-banking patents.

The case is United Services Automobile Association v. Regions Financial Corp, U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, No. 2:25-cv-00082.

For USAA: Jason Sheasby, Lisa Glasser, Rebecca Carson and Tony Rowles of Irell & Manella

For Regions: Andrew Danford, Michaela Sewall, Nina Garcia and Gregory Israelsen of Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale & Dorr
