Gold and silver prices leapt, extending a stretch of extreme volatility.
-- Gold gained more than 6% to about $4,954 a troy ounce, based on prices for most active futures contracts.
-- Equivalent contracts for silver added 13% to top $87 an ounce.
-- Copper and platinum also rallied.
-- Shares in major London-listed miners such as Antofagasta and Anglo American jumped.
Prices remain considerably below peaks notched in recent days, when silver hit an intraday high of close to $122 an ounce, and gold topped $5,600 an ounce.
