It hits us in the gut when we see fellow investors suffer a loss.  Spare a thought for those who held IGG Inc (HKG:799) for five whole years - as the share price tanked 76%.    And it's not just long term holders hurting, because the stock is down 26% in the last year.     More recently, the share price has dropped a further 13% in a month.      Since IGG has shed HK$424m from its value in the past 7 days, let's see if the longer term decline has been driven by the business' economics.  Trump has pledged to \"unleash\" American oil and gas and these 15 US stocks have developments that are poised to benefit.  While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance.  One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.   IGG became profitable within the last five years.    That would generally be considered a positive, so we are surprised to see the share price is down.   Other metrics may better explain the share price move.  The most recent dividend was actually lower than it was in the past, so that may have sent the share price lower.   The revenue decline of around 0.1% would not have helped the stock price.  So the the weak dividend and revenue data could well help explain the soft share price. When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off.  So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return.  We note that for IGG the TSR over the last 5 years was -72%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above.  The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.  A Different Perspective While the broader market gained around 34% in the last year, IGG shareholders lost 22% (even including dividends).  However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period.    However, the loss over the last year isn't as bad as the 12% per annum loss investors have suffered over the last half decade.  We would want clear information suggesting the company will grow, before taking the view that the share price will stabilize.       While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
