A pride flag was removed from New York City's Stonewall National Monument after the National Park Service issued new guidance on the display of flags at federal landmarks it manages.

Manhattan's Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal said a federal order issued Jan. 21 resulted in the removal of the Pride flag at Stonewall, birthplace of the modern LGBTQ civil-rights movement. Stonewall, located in Manhattan's Greenwich Village, was declared a national monument in 2016 by President Barack Obama.

"They cannot erase our history," Hoylman-Sigal said. "Our Pride flag will be raised again. Stay tuned."

The Interior Department, which oversees the National Park Service, said only that the U.S. flag and other congressionally or departmentally authorized flags are flown on National Park Service flagpoles, with limited exceptions. This policy had been in place for decades, and the recent guidance was issued to ensure that policy is applied consistently, the agency said.

"Any changes to flag displays are made to ensure consistency with that guidance," the Interior Department said. "Stonewall National Monument continues to preserve and interpret the site's historic significance through exhibits and programs."

Police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar, in 1969, setting off what became known as the Stonewall Rebellion. The resistance to the police crackdown inspired activists to mobilize, helping to launch the start of the gay-rights movement.

The Stonewall Inn was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999 and was named a National Historic Landmark in 2000. It became a New York City landmark in 2015.
