BP's (BP) plant in Whiting refinery in northwest Indiana does not plan to honor a national bargaining agreement, Reuters reported late Friday, citing a union representing hundreds of workers.

The United Steelworkers union agreed to a national agreement negotiated with Marathon Petroleum (MPC) for 30,000 oil industry workers, the report said.

Eric Schultz, president of United Steelworkers Local 7-1, which represents 800 workers at the Chicago-area refinery, said the oil major "maintains they have no plans to honor the National Oil Bargaining Program - the first time that has happened," according to Reuters.

The union and the company continue to negotiate, the report said.

BP and the union did not immediately reply to MT Newswires' request for comment.
