President is slated to take part in a 'Champion of Coal' event at the White House

U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to issue an executive order on Wednesday that could aid the coal industry. He's shown here in 2018 at a rally in West Virginia, a top coal-producing state.

Coal stocks advanced Wednesday morning following news that President Donald Trump plans to sign an executive order that could help the industry.

The order will call for U.S. military installations to make electricity contracts with coal-fired power plants, according to multiple published reports citing unnamed sources.

The White House didn't immediately respond to MarketWatch's request for comment on the reports about the executive order. Trump's schedule for Wednesday has him taking part in a "Champion of Coal" event at the White House at 4 p.m. Eastern.

Peabody Energy's stock (BTU) recently was up about 3.3%, while shares in Core Natural Resources (CNR) tacked on 2.6% and Warrior Met Coal $(HCC)$ added 1.3%. The broad S&P 500 equity index SPX was up 0.2% as investors digested a better-than-expected jobs report.

In addition, Trump is expected to announce funding to recommission and upgrade coal plants, following up on his administration's moves last fall to provide money for such work. He is also due to receive an inaugural "Undisputed Champion of Coal" award from an industry group, according to a Wall Street Journal report citing unnamed sources.

In another win for fossil fuels, the WSJ reported that the Trump administration is planning this week to repeal the 2009 "endangerment finding" that serves as the legal basis for federal greenhouse-gas regulation, representing the biggest rollback of American climate policy to date.
