土耳其外交部长哈坎·费丹周一晚表示，由于担忧伊朗发展核武器的野心，土耳其将考虑加入地区核军备竞赛。
费丹在接受CNN Türk采访时说，安卡拉不希望打破地区内脆弱的力量平衡，这可能引发核竞争。但在被问及土耳其是否会将伊朗发展核武器视为威胁时，他补充道，“我们可能不可避免地不得不加入同一场竞赛”。
当前，美国牵头旨在阻止伊朗获得武器级核能力。土耳其指责以色列拥有核武库，并称这破坏地区稳定。以色列既未证实也未否认这样的说法。
费丹表示，核武器的发展“需要放到更大的背景中看待”，并称这是一个“高层级的战略问题”。土耳其没有核武器计划，并且是《不扩散核武器条约》（NPT）的缔约国。土耳其目前正为能源发电建设三座核电站中的第一座。
彭博经济研究表示：“伊朗的军事核计划可能在该地区引发连锁扩散反应。沙特阿拉伯已经确认将寻求发展，尽管其暂且不具备这一能力。”
“土耳其和埃及也已释放出扩大民用核计划的兴趣。计划的扩大同样可能带来扩散风险，”彭博经济研究同时指出。
谈及美国与伊朗双方上周五在阿曼举行、并计划于本周继续进行的会谈，费丹表示，空袭“不会带来德黑兰的政权更迭”，并补充称，中东承受不起另一场战争。
“他们没有在制造原子弹，”费丹谈到伊朗时说。他还预测，由于外界对华盛顿履行其对盟友安全承诺的意愿存在疑虑，未来可能在亚洲和欧洲引发核军备竞赛。
