The drilling assault has been designed to squeeze more tonnes and grade out of what is already the country’s biggest nickel sulphide resource.The company has mapped out 32 holes for 10,000 metres of combined reverse circulation and diamond drilling, with the campaign set to kick off immediately after the final holes from phase four have completed.In a classic two-pronged approach, the reverse circulation (RC) rig will be used to infill the resource, firming up broad, shallow nickel sulphides. At the same time, deeper diamond tails will search for higher-grade massive sulphides, likely hidden in the deeper basal levels.A chunk of the RC and diamond drilling action will centre on previously identified high-grade zones within the main body of the ultramafic complex, where earlier work delivered impressive grades of between one and two per cent nickel.Seven further RC holes will target the shallow disseminated nickel sulphides, while an additional six RC holes are planned to grow the existing open-pittable material at Mulga Tank.As the Mulga Tank ultramafic complex shares strong similarities with the world-class Kambalda-style ultramafic rocks, another five RC holes will target new areas up-dip from richer basal zones of the complex that could contain basal-zone mineralisation of more than 0.4 per cent nickel.Basal zones in the Kambalda ultramafics often contain rich massive nickel sulphide and have been the cornerstone of WA’s nickel mining industry since the 1960’s.Consequently, a single diamond hole, partially funded by the State Government’s exploration incentive scheme, will also target the depths of the Mulga Tank ultramafic complex, searching for Kambalda-style massive magmatic nickel sulphides on the western margin of the Mulga Tank ultramafic body.A recent electromagnetic survey has provided several ideas for further drilling along the 1.5-kilometre-long ultramafic body known as the Panhandle. The Panhandle is a wide and linear trend of ultramafic rock running adjacent to the Mulga Tank complex and is a possible feeder channel for the main ultramafic body.Western Mines Group has been methodically drilling out the main body of the Mulga Tank Ultramafic Complex since 2024, completing four phases of RC drilling and notching up 71 holes so far. Of the holes returned with geochemical assays, 59 have intersected widespread, shallow, open-pittable disseminated nickel sulphide mineralisation.In 2025, Western Mines Group delivered its defining moment at Mulga Tank, unveiling a maiden resource of 1.97 billion tonnes grading 0.27 per cent nickel, 131ppm cobalt, 82ppm copper and 17ppb PGEs.That colossal inventory translates to an estimated 5.3 million tonnes of contained nickel, 257,000 tonnes of cobalt, 161,000 tonnes of copper and about 1.1 million ounces of platinum group elements, firmly cementing Mulga Tank’s status as a heavyweight in the global nickel sulphide ranks.Western Mines Group confirmed last week that extensive magmatic nickel sulphides were intersected from a deep diamond-tailed hole. The presence of magmatic sulphides is often a key indicator of large nickel sulphide deposits.When stacked together with earlier RC results, the full hole chalked up a remarkable 466-metre continuous run of nickel sulphide mineralisation, grading 0.32 per cent nickel, 130ppm cobalt, 49ppm copper and 23ppb platinum plus palladium.A focus of the program is the ongoing hunt for higher grade that we believe this extensive system can produce. Also looking for those shallow +0.4% Ni tonnes to optimise an open-pit mine plan, we’ll look to test a few new areas of the Complex, hoping to snag the up-dip continuation of the upper active zone we recently saw. Western Mines Group managing director Dr Caedmon MarriottNickel prices, along with many other commodities, have been trending higher in recent months amid growing concern about possible supply constraints out of Indonesia, the world’s biggest producer, which has flagged plans to trim mining permits in 2026. After averaging about US$15,000 (A$21,400) per tonne through 2025, the metal has recently steadied around US$17,216 (A$24,040) per tonne.With rigs about to turn and multiple high-impact targets lined up, Western Mines is moving Mulga Tank from a sheer scale story towards a potential grade-and-development narrative.If phase five drilling can thicken the sweet spots, extend shallow tonnes and confirm deeper massive sulphide potential, the giant WA system could begin to emerge as a potential cornerstone of Australia’s next nickel chapter.
