But that shouldn't obscure the pleasing returns achieved by shareholders over the last three years.  After all, the share price is up a market-beating 63% in that time.      Although AML3D has shed AU$19m from its market cap this week, let's take a look at its longer term fundamental trends and see if they've driven returns.  AI is about to change healthcare. These 20 stocks are working on everything from early diagnostics to drug discovery. The best part - they are all under $10bn in marketcap - there is still time to get in early.  AML3D wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option.  When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally hope to see good revenue growth.  That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.   AML3D's revenue trended up 69% each year over three years.   That's well above most pre-profit companies.   The share price rise of 18% per year throughout that time is nice to see, and given the revenue growth, that gain seems somewhat justified.  If that's the case, now might be the time to take a close look at AML3D.  If the company is trending towards profitability then it could be very interesting. Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders.   We note that AML3D's TSR, at 66% is higher than its share price return of 63%. When you consider it hasn't been paying a dividend, this data suggests shareholders have benefitted from a spin-off, or had the opportunity to acquire attractively priced shares in a discounted capital raising.   A Different Perspective It's good to see that AML3D has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 6.9% in the last twelve months.    Notably the five-year annualised TSR loss of 9% per year compares very unfavourably with the recent share price performance.  We generally put more weight on the long term performance over the short term, but the recent improvement could hint at a (positive) inflection point within the business.        While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
