Before making this announcement, ASX's was paying out quite a large proportion of earnings and 80% of free cash flows.  This is usually an indication that the focus of the company is returning cash to shareholders rather than reinvesting it for growth.    EPS is set to grow by 3.9% over the next year.  If recent patterns in the dividend continues, the payout ratio in 12 months could be 77% which is a bit high but can definitely be sustainable. The dividend has gone from an annual total of A$1.9 in 2016 to the most recent total annual payment of A$2.23.      This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 1.6% over that duration.     We're glad to see the dividend has risen, but with a limited rate of growth and fluctuations in the payments the total shareholder return may be limited.     The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited  With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing.      Although it's important to note that ASX's earnings per share has basically not grown from where it was five years ago, which could erode the purchasing power of the dividend over time.      ASX's earnings per share has barely grown, which is not ideal - perhaps this is why the company pays out the majority of its earnings to shareholders.  That's fine as far as it goes, but we're less enthusiastic as this often signals that the dividend is likely to grow slower in the future.    Our Thoughts On ASX's Dividend  Overall, it's not great to see that the dividend has been cut, but this might be explained by the payments being a bit high previously.      The payments are bit high to be considered sustainable, and the track record isn't the best.     We would be a touch cautious of relying on this stock primarily for the dividend income.   It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
