Pinterest Needs to Explain Monetization Gap -- Market Talk

0843 ET - Pinterest management needs to explain why they've been unable to more successfully monetize their platform, Benchmark analysts Mark Zgutowicz and Alex Lavigne say in a note. The company said it sees about 80 billion monthly searches, with more than half of those coming from users who intend to buy products, according to the analysts. "The key question that remains is why 40B high intent monthly searches are not monetizing better? Is it measurement/attribution gaps particularly off-platform conversion; lack of auction depth/density/liquidity, or simply, intent does not equal immediacy for Pinterest users?," the analysts say. "We would also like to hear management address the high commercial intent/low monetization disconnect more tangibly." Pinterest slides 22% premarket. (elias.schisgall@wsj.com)
