Big enough to be complicated, but not organized enough to feel stable. “Year 2 was utter hell,” one bakery owner wrote. “Year 3 was just regular hell.”\nEquipment failures were a common theme. “Everything and I mean everything starts to break in the 3-5 year range,” said an alcohol business owner with $1.3 million in annual sales. Once warranties expire, the capital expenses “kick in the teeth,” they added.\nOthers emphasized that the real exhaustion doesn’t come from one catastrophic event. It comes from constant small interruptions. A staff member calls in sick. A supplier runs out of stock. A permit needs renewing. Freight costs rise. Something leaks. Something breaks.\n“Small businesses aren’t exhausting because of one big problem,” one commenter wrote. “They’re exhausting because of constant small interruptions.”\nThe mental load, many agreed, never switches off.
