So we don't think the recent decline in the share price means its story is a sad one.  Of course what matters most is whether the business can improve itself sustainably, thus justifying a higher price.      In light of the stock dropping 11% in the past week, we want to investigate the longer term story, and see if fundamentals have been the driver of the company's positive five-year return. To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine.  One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).   Over half a decade, Hor Kew managed to grow its earnings per share at 35% a year.    So the EPS growth rate is rather close to the annualized share price gain of 42% per year.   Therefore one could conclude that sentiment towards the shares hasn't morphed very much.  Rather, the share price has approximately tracked EPS growth. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off.  So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return.  In the case of Hor Kew, it has a TSR of 498% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned.  This is largely a result of its dividend payments!  A Different Perspective It's nice to see that Hor Kew shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 160% over the last year.   That's including the dividend.     Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 43% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times.  Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity.
