Japanese major battery company GS Yuasa International Ltd. announced on Wednesday that it will build a new lithium-ion battery production factory to the north of Tokyo. With a total project cost of 70.3 billion yen, the company plans to begin supplying batteries primarily for energy storage facilities in October 2028.
Storage batteries help balance power supply and demand, and demand for them is growing as power generation from renewable energy sources expands. The planned factory will have an annual production capacity of 2 gigawatt-hours, making it among the biggest in Japan.
The company will utilize up to 24.8 billion yen in subsidies from the Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry.
