2月26日，国际货币基金组织(IMF)呼吁美国缩减不断扩大的财政赤字，认为这是降低其认为过高的经常账赤字和贸易逆差的最佳途径。该组织在这一问题上与特朗普政府存在一些共同关切。

在IMF发布美国政策年度评估后，IMF总裁格奥尔基耶娃向记者表示，结论是经常账赤字过大，而美国政府也认识到这一点。在美国最高法院裁定特朗普总统广泛的紧急关税措施违法后，其政府援引1974年贸易法第122条实施替代性关税举措，旨在改善国际收支平衡。但IMF西半球事务主管Nigel Chalk指出，降低经常账赤字的最佳途径是削减美国财政赤字。

IMF预计短期内经常账赤字将相当于GDP的3.5%至4.0%。IMF在对特朗普政府政策的首份第四条磋商(Article IV)报告中表示，2026年美国经济增速将保持2.4%的韧性水平，与其1月的预测一致；通胀率要到2027年初才能回到美联储2%的目标。但IMF指出，未来数年美国财政赤字将维持在相当于GDP的7%-8%区间，是财长贝森特目标水平的两倍多，且到2031年综合政府债务将达到GDP的140%。
