Speaker Mike Johnson (R., La.,) is displaying George Washington's gavel on his platform at the State of the Union address tonight. Washington first used the gavel in 1793 to lay the cornerstone of the U.S. Capitol, according to the United States Capitol Historical Society.
Johnson is the first speaker to exhibit Washington's gavel during a State of the Union speech, highlighting the celebrations as the U.S. enters its 250th year, according to the society.
