3月2日，花旗最新报告警告称，随着越来越多企业采用AI，最终将导致失业率上升，可能进一步使美国走向通货紧缩之路。经济学家通常认为，通缩比通胀过热更难解决。当物价过快上涨时，美联储可以通过加息来压抑物价；但若陷入通缩，美联储降息的空间有限，一旦利率降至接近零水准后，决策者就必须转向其他政策工具来刺激经济。
在过去一个世纪里，美国仅在少数几次出现通货紧缩，而且每一次都发生在前所未有的经济压力之下，例如大萧条与全球金融危机期间。不过，报告也指出，与AI相关发展对经济产生实质影响的时间点，仍然非常不明确。
