Heidelberg Materials said it would close a cement plant in west Germany due to a significant decline in cement sales driven by weak construction demand.

The German building materials group on Friday said a total of 53 employees would be affected by the closure of the Paderborn Cement Plant.

Solutions are being developed, that include internal transfers to nearby sites within the company, Heidelberg Materials said.

Open positions created through early retirement programs at neighboring cements plants are also being offered to the affected employees, it added.

The closure only applies to the cement plant, while activities from subsidiary Mineralik, as well as operations of the local ready-mixed concrete plant will remain unchanged, the group said.

The step is part of Heidelberg Material's optimization of its European production network, increasingly aligning its cement portfolio toward low-carbon products, it said.
