Market Chatter: COSCO Shipping Suspends Services at Panama's Balboa Port

China COSCO Shipping suspended services at the Balboa port in Panama, Bloomberg News reported, citing local news outlet La Prensa.

The suspension came after Beijing asked Chinese shipping companies to reroute cargo away from Panama and for state firms to stop new projects in the country, the report said.

China warned against the forced takeover of two facilities held by a unit of CK Hutchison Holdings (HKG:0001) at the Balboa port. Panama's Supreme Court annulled the Hong Kong-listed company's contract for the facilities' operation, the report said.

Panama handed the operations of the terminals in Balboa and Cristobal to Maersk's unit, APM Terminals, and MSC Mediterranean Shipping.

Cosco did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
