BBVA Investors Want a Clear Rationale for Corporate and Investment Banking Strategy -- Market Talk

1159 GMT - The market wants a clear rationale for BBVA's expansion in corporate and investment banking in the U.S., J.P. Morgan says in a note. "Investors should watch closely for signs that management could squander its enhanced capital generation in pursuit of empire building," analysts write. The Spanish bank, which aims to become a bigger player in global CIB, is hosting an investor day for the unit on Tuesday. Their case will likely be based on cashing in on its extensive footprint across the Spain-Mexico-Latam-U.S. corridor and the strength of its balance sheet. "The task now is to exploit [its competitive advantage] without letting ambition outrun discipline," they add. Shares are down nearly 11% year to date. (elena.vardon@wsj.com)
