Shares of fertilizer producers are among the hottest stocks in the market this year due to war in the Persian Gulf choking off supplies of ammonia, urea, phosphates and natural gas from Middle East producers.

The highest flier of the bunch is CF Industries, which produces nitrogen and ammonia fertilizers, and is trading near its all-time high. Traders are betting that comparatively low U.S. natural-gas prices will give CF an advantage over competitors in the Middle East and in countries that rely on imported gas, huge volumes of which are consumed producing ammonia and nitrogen.
