该机构在周一提交的文件中提议修订联邦机动车辆安全标准 （FMVSS） 第 102 号，该标准规定了“变速箱换档顺序、起动机联锁和变速箱制动效果”。而修订内容指出，没有方向盘和踏板的自动驾驶汽车不需要配备档位指示器。
NHTSA 在文件中表示：“由于变速箱换档位置显示无法满足配备 ADS 且没有手动操作驾驶控制装置的车辆的相同安全需求，因此该修正案不会影响车辆安全。”这一变化不会影响传统车辆。
这一修订可能会为马斯克的Cybercab带来重大推动力，该车将没有方向盘或踏板，并将在特斯拉位于德克萨斯州的超级工厂投入生产。据报道，该公司建立了每周生产数百辆 Cybercab 的生产线。
早些时候，特斯拉在社交媒体上发布了该车的首款量产版，马斯克此前曾确认该车的售价将在 3 万美元左右或更低。这位亿万富翁早些时候曾表示，该车的生产一开始会“极其缓慢”，然后才会加快生产。
