0308 GMT - India's coming state elections could be an implicit referendum for the Modi government's management of the energy shock, says Shilan Shah at Capital Economics. Elections are due in Kerala, Assam, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and the union territory of Puducherry next month. Shortage of liquified petroleum gas, predominantly used in India for cooking, and shortage of liquified natural gas, used in fertilizer production, could become political issues. Fuel prices in major cities such as Chennai and Kolkata have remained unchanged with oil marketing companies absorbing higher costs, but that strategy can only continue for a limited period, the economist says in a note. If the Iran conflict drags on further, fiscal support may be required, complicating the government's fiscal consolidation plans, she adds. (monica.gupta@wsj.com)
