Tech Down as Alphabet AI Breakthrough Hits Chip Stocks -- Tech Roundup

Shares of technology companies fell as an artificial-intelligence computing breakthrough at Alphabet continued to send chills through semiconductor stocks.

The iShares Semiconductor exchange-traded fund, which tracks the PHLX Semiconductor Soxx index of chip makers, lost about 4.6% this week. Memory chip makers such as Micron Technologies were particularly hard hit.

Toshiba, Mitsubishi Electric and Rohm are exploring a possible merger of their power semiconductor businesses to cope with increasingly fierce international competition.
