Market Chatter: Taiwan Airlines to Hike Fuel Fees on International, Domestic Routes

Taiwan will raise fuel surcharges on international flights starting April 7, following a sharp climb in global crude oil prices, Focus Taiwan reported, citing the Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) on Wednesday.

CAA Director-General Ho Shu-ping said the increase will add $27.50 for short-haul routes and $71.50 for long-haul routes, bringing surcharges to $45 and $117, respectively. This reportedly marks a 157% rise.

For domestic flights, fares are expected to rise by an average of NT$97 ($3.03) to cover fuel costs, though the Civil Aviation Operation Fund will offset part of the increase for routes between Taiwan and offshore islands. The CAA instructed carriers to clearly communicate the changes to passengers, travel agents, and cargo clients to prevent misunderstandings, the news outlet said.
