Major Japanese online brokerage SBI Holdings Inc. has entered a capital and business alliance with Tokyu Fudosan Holdings Corp. -- a major real estate firm -- to expand their businesses related to intellectual property in entertainment, such as video games, music and manga.

The two companies have set the field as a growth area and will expand it as part of their media-related businesses. SBI Holdings announced the alliance on Tuesday.

Last year, SBI Holdings established SBI Neo Media Holdings Co., a subsidiary that conducts IP businesses and other media-related operations. The online brokerage has since made a series of investments in talent agencies and online media companies.

SBI Holdings concluded that the alliance would create synergies, as Tokyu Fudosan Holdings is now working on a development project centered on Shibuya Station, a hub of youth culture. The real estate firm is inviting entertainment-related companies to join the project.

Under the partnership, Tokyu Fudosan Holdings will invest 5 billion yen in a new 100-billion-yen investment fund to be established by SBI Holdings. At the same time, the online brokerage will acquire up to 1.39% of the real estate firm's shares.

The two companies will work on drawing content companies to the Shibuya district and the surrounding areas, as well as fostering collaboration among startups. They are also considering utilizing Tokyu Group's nationwide network of commercial facilities and lodging properties to offer experience-based services to customers.

In mid-May, SBI Holdings announced that the company and its two group firms had increased their stake in Fuji Media Holdings Inc. to 6.2%. SBI Holdings CEO Yoshitaka Kitao refrained from commenting on whether the move is related to the company's strategy on media-related operations. "I have nothing to say at this stage," Kitao said during a press conference held Tuesday in Tokyo.
