美国也有自己的“霍尔木兹海峡”，那就是休斯敦航道。
作为美国最繁忙的水道，这条航道是通往美国石油工业核心地带的重要门户，每天约有70万桶原油经由此航道出口。这一运输量支撑着世界最大的炼油和钻井中心之一。同时，这也使休斯顿航道成为一个著名的咽喉要道，目前正在进行大规模投资，以加强其抵御飓风的能力。
2022年，国会批准了美国陆军工程兵团有史以来最大的单笔投资建议：耗资340亿美元的德克萨斯州海岸项目。该项目近期获得了500万美元的联邦拨款，旨在改造休斯敦航道以及德克萨斯州墨西哥湾沿岸地区。
墨西哥湾沿岸保护区（GCPD）的执行主任Coalter Baker在接受采访时表示：“这个项目的每个部分都规模庞大，而且就是旨在为协同运作而设计”。GCPD是与陆军工程兵团一起负责德克萨斯州海岸项目的非联邦赞助商。
该工程包括：耗资190亿美元、长两英里的风暴潮屏障；造价40亿美元、环绕加尔维斯顿湾的环形堤坝；以及两套抽水系统，每套系统的抽水能力高达20，000立方英尺/秒。
该项目可能需要长达20年的时间才能完成，目前仍处于初期阶段，从而面临成本不断攀升和政治环境动荡的局面。
Baker表示：“近期历史表明，风暴过后往往会有大笔资金到位。我们目前的策略是推进设计工作，以确保一旦飓风来袭，我们就能获得那笔巨额拨款。”
