Australia-EU FTA Economic Benefit Likely Small -- Market Talk

0402 GMT - The recently signed free trade deal between Australia and the EU will have a small, but measurable economic impact on Australia. According to research by BMI, a unit of Fitch Solutions, tariff elimination will provide a modest boost to Australia's GDP growth worth 0.05 percentage point of GDP after five years, and 0.1 percentage point of GDP after 10 years, BMI says. Although the deal removes around 98% of tariffs on Australia's exports to the EU and over 99% of tariffs on EU goods, Australia's direct benefit from trade will likely be relatively modest, BMI says.
