美军称在伊朗的这次飞行员营救任务险些中途夭折，原因是用于渗透行动的两架MC-130特种作战飞机出现机械故障，无法起飞。这导致部分营救人员突然面临被困伊朗境内的危险。一名美国官员称，这是整个任务中真正令人“心惊肉跳”的危急时刻。
随着时间紧迫、暴露风险不断升高，美军指挥官决定增派飞机，分批撤离这支队伍。营救小组在紧张中等待了数小时，后备计划才得以成功实施。
撤离完成后，美军并未将敏感装备遗留下来，而是在现场炸毁了这两架故障飞机。美方摧毁的装备包括：2架故障MC-130飞机和另外4架直升机。
