The number of seasonally adjusted dwellings commenced in Australia rose 8% to 53,567 units in the December 2025 quarter, compared with 49,582 units in the previous quarter, data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed on Wednesday.
Within the private sector, new house commencements fell 0.9% to 28,469 dwellings, while other residential commencements rose past 23% to 23,849 dwellings.
Meanwhile, the number of seasonally adjusted dwellings completed in Australia fell by 1.7% to 43,536 units in the December 2025 quarter, compared with 44,304 units in the previous quarter.
Private sector new house completions down 3.9% to 26,052, and other residential completions dropping 1.1% to 16,172.
The value of seasonally adjusted total building work done rose 0.4% to AU$43.88 billion in the December 2025 quarter, compared with AU$43.69 billion in the September 2025 quarter.
Compared with the year-earlier period, dwelling commencements rose past 26%, while dwelling completions fell 3.9% in the December 2025 quarter.
