根据美国财政部于今年3月发布的数据，美国联邦债务总额首次突破39万亿美元。其中，31.4万亿美元为公共债务，由国内外投资者持有；7.6万亿美元为政府内部债务，主要通过社会保障等项目产生。
就公共债务而言，美国国内投资者持有17.7万亿美元的美债，几乎是海外投资者持有量(9.3万亿美元)的两倍。共同基金和养老基金是最大的公众持有者，合计持有6.6万亿美元。美联储持有4.4万亿美元的美债，超过前三大海外债权国——日本、英国和中国——持有美债的总额。
此外，沃伦·巴菲特通过伯克希尔·哈撒韦持有美国国债，是最大的非政府投资者截至2025年第四季度，其持有的美国国债价值高达3390亿美元。
