Tesla is preparing to launch a larger version of its globally popular electric SUV in India as early as next week, according to sources familiar with the plans, Bloomberg reported.

The Model Y L, featuring a six-seat, long-wheelbase design that first debuted in China last year, will mark Tesla's first new product introduction in India since its initial market entry. This variant offers a three-row seating arrangement targeting families needing more space than the standard five-seat Model Y, which Tesla started selling in India last July.

The new model will be exported from Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory in China, currently the sole production facility manufacturing this SUV variant. The same facility also supplies the standard and long-range Model Y versions for the Indian market.

This expansion forms part of Tesla's strategy to refresh its product offerings without developing completely new platforms, while simultaneously addressing its modest sales performance in India where imported vehicles face import duties between 70% and 100%.
