PPG's Price Hikes Could Signal More Pressure Ahead for Consumers -- Market Talk

Dow Jones
Apr 17

1342 ET - PPG's move to raise prices by up to 20% could indicate further pain ahead for consumers due to the war in Iran, as increased prices for raw materials, energy, logistics and packaging spread and eventually filter down to shoppers, Mizuho says in a note. The analysts point to potential headwinds for retailers like Home Depot and Lowe's in particular, which sell products similar to PPG's paints, coatings and other specialty products. "While price increases can typically aid sales growth, demand needs to be in the right spot," the analysts say. "Layering on more inflation at a time of subdued home-related activity and elevated rates could act as another weight on the sector's recovery." PepsiCo also recently warned of further inflation to come, they say. (kelly.cloonan@wsj.com)
