国际能源署署长在周五刊发的一篇采访中表示，在谋求提升能源安全与经济稳定的背景下，意大利应重新审视其放弃核电的决定。
意大利目前没有在运核反应堆，且高度依赖能源进口，其中就包括从法国等邻国进口的核电电力。
在1987年和2011年两次全民公投后，意大利禁止建设核电站，但该国政府正起草相关法规，拟通过采用新型核电技术解除这一禁令。
当被问及意大利国内有关重启核电的讨论是否为正确选择时，国际能源署执行主任法提赫・比罗尔表示：“我知道意大利曾在两次公投中否决了核电。但早在两年前，我就在罗马说过，如果我是意大利政府，我会重新考虑这一决定，并更深入地研究核电。”
比罗尔称，意大利能源资源并不丰富，尽管其在可再生能源领域表现出色，但仍需要“稳定、持续的电力生产”。
他表示：“为了经济繁荣、能源安全与国家主权，意大利政府应审慎评估核电，既包括传统核电技术，也包括新型模块化反应堆。”
意大利政府已起草一份新的核电法律框架，预计议会将在未来数月内予以批准，但该议题在多数民众中仍存在争议。
自伊朗冲突爆发以来，全球各国政策制定者愈发寻求降低对油气进口的长期依赖，其中就包括扩大核电应用。
反核人士则以安全隐患、前期建设投入高昂以及建设周期过长为由表示反对。
