Credit: 7NEWS Spotlight“Made in China” a decade ago was a colloquialism for a cheap piece of clothing thought to come from a Chinese sweatshop.Now, Spotlight’s investigation exposes a sophisticated strategy that has allowed China to exploit men, women, and children in the poorest nations on earth.“The cobalt from children is very cheap,” Gladys Nyembo said from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.Be the first to know: Add 7NEWS as your preferred news source on Google“[The Chinese companies] don’t care about the health of the children.”Australia’s squandered opportunityAndrew Tong’s company Cobalt Blue owns the rights to mine the world’s largest known pure cobalt reserve, situated just outside Broken Hill in outback NSW.But Tong’s reserve is effectively worthless, as China has flooded the market with cheap, dirty cobalt from Congo.“Personally, I’m not very comfortable with that. We’ve been very happy for China to take near monopolistic positions in all these critical minerals,” Tong said.“We’ve done that with no regard to the environment, no regard to labour standards, and we’ve been very happy to buy back the products.”Environmental cost of ‘net zero’7NEWS Spotlight’s investigation also exposes how Australia’s renewables rollout is leading to the destruction of large swathes of high-value biodiversity habitat.Australians forests and prime agricultural land are being torn up to make way for renewable projects, transmission lines, and mega batteries.Environmental activist and cartographer Steven Nowakowski worries what Australia will look like.Reporter Liam Bartlett with Cartogropher Steven Nowakowski.
