Twilio shares gained after the company raised its full-year outlook on higher first-quarter sales and profit.

The stock gained 23% to $181.50 in premarket trading Friday. Through Thursday's close, shares were up about 4% this year.

The company, which helps other businesses create customized customer-service platforms, raised its sales growth outlook for the year to 14% to 15%, up from a prior range of 11.5% to 12.5%.

In the current quarter, Twilio expects revenue to be $1.42 billion to $1.43 billion, which would beat Wall Street's estimate of $1.39 billion, according to FactSet.

Twilio also lifted its full-year adjusted-earnings range to $1.08 billion to $1.10 billion, up from the prior $1.04 billion to $1.06 billion.

The outlook came as the company posted a 20% increase in first-quarter revenue to $1.41 billion, ahead of the $1.34 billion analysts were projecting.

Profit jumped to $90.1 million, or 57 cents a share, in the quarter, from $20 million, or 12 cents a share, the year before.
