platform”.Perth-based Nico Resources told the Australian Securities Exchange on Monday it had signed a memorandum of understanding with Brisbane-headquartered Pure Battery Technologies to jointly evaluate establishing and developing the project in Australia, the United States and Europe.Nico said the companies would use their respective resources, capabilities, and knowledge to develop an integrated process chain focused on the production of mixed hydroxide precipitate and precursor cathode active material through the use of Pure Battery Technologies’ patented process technology.The WA company said this approach would be a key enabler for the entire critical minerals market in Australia and Europe and supported and strengthened efforts to develop projects in the developing and growing US battery material market.Nico’s Wingellina nickel-cobalt project is near the WA border with the Northern Territory and South Australia and boasts a reserve of 1.56 million tonnes of contained nickel capable of producing about 40,000 tonnes of nickel and 3000t of cobalt annually in a mixed hydroxide precipitate for at least 42 years.Pure Battery Technologies owns and operates the Hagen refinery in Germany, where an expansion is under way to produce up to 15,000 tonnes per annum of pCAM.NiCo said the Hagen processing plant was one of few western pCAM producers with both an operating and permitted expansion pathway.The WA company said Pure Battery Technologies was also currently in discussions with the US departments of commerce, energy, and war to establish a facility in the US which would produce high-purity nickel products and pCAM to provide greater domestic supply resilience and stronger advanced manufacturing capability in critical battery materials.Nico’s managing director Jonathan Shellabear said the company’s Wingellina project was one of Australia’s most undeveloped nickel-cobalt resources and Pure Battery Technologies’ operating refinery and technology could help change this.“This MOU gives both parties a defined framework to engage private and government funding partners around an integrated, Australian-originated battery supply chain,” he said.Pure Battery Technologies chief executive Staffan Ever said long-term, traceable resource supply was the first thing cathode buyers and funding partners asked about.“Wingellina’s 42-year project life gives the refining strategy the depth it requires,” he said.“We look forward to working with Nico, and with the funding programs available supporting Australian critical-minerals processing, to bring the integrated platform forward.“This work will not only benefit the Australian economy and its critical minerals industry but also support PBT’s broader strategic focus to anchor our technology globally, including through our US projects.”Pure Battery Technologies in 2024 shelved plans to develop a $460 million battery materials refinery hub at Mungari, west of Kalgoorlie-Boulder in the Shire of Coolgardie.The company set up the Hagen refinery with the initial plan to test its unique technology for the production of pCAM that reduced both emissions and costs — and then use it at the Goldfields plant.But the collapse in the global nickel market that has stalled Wingellina and saw the closure of operations such as BHP’s Kalgoorlie nickel smelter and Wyloo’s Kambalda mines put paid to those plans.There were also funding problems, with the Federal Government not going ahead with a $120m grant.Mr Ever in February succeeded Bjorn Zikarsky as chief executive,
