Cava thinks the key to keeping customers coming is an $11.67 grilled chicken bowl.

Holding prices steady and affordable on popular menu items is helping the Mediterranean chain gain traffic, even if it means taking a hit on margins as costs rise, CEO Brett Schulman said in an interview. "We have to keep our heads down on building a great business that delivers a great value proposition to our guests."

Cava on Tuesday reported a 9.7% same-store sales increase in its first quarter, with customer traffic jumping 6.8%. Schulman said more lower-income consumers and young people are coming this year, reversing a decline among some of those customers last year.

The chain beat analysts' estimates for its first quarter, and boosted sales and profit expectations for its fiscal year. Shares jumped roughly 6% in after-hours trading.
