A Lot of Companies Could Be Interested in Acquiring IMAX -- Market Talk

0800 ET - There is a long list of companies that might be interested in acquiring IMAX, Benchmark analyst Mike Hickey says in a research note. That's because IMAX operates less like a traditional theater chain, and more like a premium entertainment-technology platform, he says. He thinks potential buyers could include Sony, Apple, Amazon, Disney, Comcast/NBCUniversal, Netflix, Sphere Entertainment and Cinepolis. "We view Sphere as particularly compelling given its focus on immersive premium entertainment experiences, where IMAX's global network, filmmaker ecosystem, and premium brand could materially expand Sphere's strategic positioning," Hickey says. Sony also stands out as a highly logical acquirer, given its vertically integrated exposure across cameras, gaming, production technology and film studios, he adds. IMAX jumps 14% premarket.
