AN2 Therapeutics (ANTX) said Thursday its experimental drug, AN2-502998, to treat chronic Chagas disease caused by infection with the parasite T. cruzi showed efficacy in a nonhuman primate study and was generally well tolerated in a Phase 1 study in healthy volunteers.

The drug developer said a 28-day treatment led to 100% elimination of the parasite, with effects lasting four months after treatment ended in non-human primates with naturally acquired infection.

The company said the exposure levels required in animals are achievable in humans.

In a phase 1 study in healthy volunteers, multiple ascending doses were generally well tolerated and showed drug levels consistent with those linked to efficacy in animal studies, it added.
