Stressed Consumers Buying Fewer Groceries to Afford Rising Gas -- Market Talk

1041 ET - Dollar General's core customer is stressed. "While there were a variety of puts and takes on customer budgets during Q1, our core customer continues to be financially constrained as any benefit from tax benefits was largely offset by higher fuel prices and reductions in Snap benefit payment," CEO Todd Vasos says on a call with analysts. He notes that many customers have been cutting back spending on household expenses, including food purchases, due to rising fuel costs. "This pressure has been more pronounced on customers in rural communities as they work to minimize trip distance and make trade offs in their search for everyday affordability and value," Vasos says.
