1131 GMT - Europe needs to achieve strategic autonomy to respond to the challenges brought by artificial intelligence, Telefonica CEO Marc Murtra says at Cercle d'Economia in Barcelona. While absolute sovereignty is impossible, achieving strategic autonomy is crucial, he says. Europe currently faces a "gigantic dependency" when it comes to AI and has no sovereignty over microchips, energy, infrastructure and large language models, he adds. Out of the top 50 LLMs globally, 28 are American, 21 are Chinese, and only one--France's Mistral--is European, he notes. ( najat.kantouar@wsj.com)
