Intel (INTC) and Hitachi said Friday they announced a strategic collaboration to advance physical artificial intelligence, advanced computing, and digital infrastructure in industrial sectors.

The organizations will focus on five areas, including factory automation, quantum computing, energy optimization, custom silicon and edge-AI applications, and foundry tools, the companies said.

Hitachi will use data from its measuring and etching systems to perform predictive diagnostics and maintenance optimization for semiconductor fabrication, they said.

The companies also said Hitachi's HMAX Energy will be deployed within Intel's fabs to provide managed services for core power equipment, while Intel plans to supply high-voltage silicon chips to improve Hitachi's electrical systems.
