Japan and Germany will on Wednesday hold a joint public-private conference for fostering cooperation in the aerospace and defense industries. The Japanese government aims to strengthen ties with German companies -- which are part of a large defense sector and hold advanced technologies such as for tanks -- and to expand business opportunities for Japanese firms.

The conference in Berlin is co-hosted by Japan's Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry and Germany's Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. It will be the first time the two ministries jointly host such an event. Participating Japanese companies include IHI Corp., Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd., Toshiba Corp., the Japan Bank for International Cooperation and a space-related startup. Major European companies, including the aircraft giant Airbus, will also participate.

Japan is working to strengthen its defense industry such as by expanding exports of defense equipment. It aims to use the conference as a steppingstone for Japanese companies to join the supply chain.
