First-quarter earnings from Chewy were nothing special, but shares of the pet supplies retailer were rising sharply in premarket trading.

Adjusted earnings came to 43 cents a share, in line with analysts' estimates. Net sales rose 7.7% to $3.36 billion, narrowly beating Wall Street's call for $3.35 billion. The company didn't provide guidance in its earnings release.

Although results largely met expectations, they avoided the worst-case scenarios some investors might have been bracing for. Chewy CEO Sumit Singh sparked concerns just weeks ago when he noted that consumers were "more stretched" than they had been entering the year.

Shares jumped 7.4% in Wednesday's premarket session. Futures tracking the benchmark S&P 500 were down 0.7%.
