Chinese regulators summoned executives from Walmart's China unit over food-safety issues at Sam's Club stores and online platforms.

The State Administration for Market Regulation said Monday that it had met with the management team of Walmart's Sam's Club unit after identifying multiple food-safety incidents involving the retailer's stores and online platforms.

Regulators urged the company to strengthen food-safety controls, comply with relevant laws and regulations, and address risks across its supply chain, according to the statement.

Walmart's China office didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from The Wall Street Journal.

Sam's Club has become a popular destination for China's middle-class consumers and remains a key growth driver for Walmart in the country. The retailer has continued expanding the membership-based chain despite a broader slowdown in consumer spending.
