Equinor said that recently completed appraisal wells in the Johan Sverdrup field in the North Sea have proven increased oil volumes, with the discoveries set to form the basis of a new phase of development at the project, which is Norway's largest oil-producing field.

Preliminary estimates put the new discoveries at between 20 million and 30 million barrels of oil equivalent, it said.

The discoveries will be developed by connecting to existing infrastructure on Johan Sverdrup, with a possible production start in 2029.

"These are important and profitable volumes for Johan Sverdrup," said Kjetil Hove, head of development and production Norway. "By tying new resources to existing infrastructure, we can develop them quickly, with low costs and low emissions."

Equinor is the operator of Johan Sverdrup field with a 42.62% stake, while Aker BP holds a 31.57% interest, Petoro 17.36% and TotalEnergies 8.44%.
