Cognition Therapeutics (CGTX) said Tuesday it has received a notice of allowance from the US Patent and Trademark Office for its patent application covering a polymorphic crystalline form of zervimesine, its lead drug candidate for Alzheimer's disease.
The patent, once issued, will provide protection for the formulation through 2045 and, if granted a standard five-year extension, through 2050, the company said.
The formulation is a potential treatment for age-related degenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, geographic atrophy, and dementia with Lewy bodies, the company said.
The latest configuration of this polymorphic form of zervimesine has a better pharmaceutical profile with greater chemical stability, Cognition said.
Shares of the company were up 2.5% in premarket activity Tuesday.
